| Sitemanager FTP FAQs
1. Why hasn't Telusys supported FTP in the past?
FTP has been a notoriously insecure protocol with many serious bugs being
announced on a monthly basis. Standard FTP servers provide no tools or
methods that can control user or group access to Web site content in a complex
environment such as the one Telusys employs that which contains dozens of integrated
interdependent tools.
Standard FTP does not provide sophisticated auditing of
content management functions and does not provide any ability to support SSL or
encryption.
FTP typically requires separate FTP client software, instead of
a Web browser, and does not integrate with the Web. Additionally, it is not aware of
Web content and any special handling that it may require.
2. Don't all Web hosting companies just automatically support standard
FTP?
No. All Web hosting companies do not automatically support open FTP access. In
fact, Web sites that utilize software such as MS FrontPage can not
simultaneously support open FTP access and FrontPage access because FrontPage
must manage and track changes made to site files in order for the software to
work correctly. Web hosting companies support many protocols, including FTP,
proprietary systems, virtual drive access through Windows mountable volumes,
WebDav, Web interfaces, and numerous other methods.
3. Why did Telusys develop Sitemanager FTP?
Sitemanager FTP was developed to answer the needs of clients that desire an
FTP interface to their site content. Sitemanager FTP is a custom FTP server
that is aware of the Telusys Sitemanager environment. It integrates with all of the
Telusys software tools, and most importantly prevents destructive operations
from taking place that would disrupt the hosting of the Web site, security on
the site, or the operation of programs that run of the site.
4. How do I utilize an FTP client to update my Web site?
There are several hundred FTP clients, both free and commercial, in the market.
The software varies greatly in features,
interfaces, and design. Due to the huge number of FTP clients in the market,
and the voluminous books, FAQs, and tutorials on the usage of FTP, Telusys will
not be providing training or support on the usage of FTP client software or the
usage of FTP for Web site content management.
5. Why does Telusys require a fixed or static IP address to utilize the FTP
service?
Telusys operates a closed secure network. Despite the fact that we will be
supporting FTP, we maintain that there is risk involved in its usage. After analyzing
security logs on our systems, it is clear that hackers actively probe for
vulnerable FTP ports. The FTP user name and password is the first layer of
protection for our clients utilizing FTP, because this information is sent through
the Internet unencrypted, it can also fall into the wrong hands. Addressing this
possibility we developed a second layer of security to only allow incoming FTP connections
through our firewalls to specific Web servers from authorized computers.
6. I have a dynamic IP address or a dial-up connection, can I still utilize
Sitemanager FTP?
If you have a dynamic connection, whether it is ISDN, DSL, Satellite, Cable
Modem, or Dial-up, you will not be able to utilize Sitemanager FTP. In almost
all cases you can order a static address from your Internet access provider,
but generally you will have to pay a small monthly premium for this feature.
If you are not sure if you have a static or dynamic IP address, contact your
Internet access provider or network administrator to find out.
7. My company's network dynamically assigns IP addresses, uses NAT, or we
are all behind a firewall that hides my network address, can I utilize
Sitemanager FTP?
Yes. Under those circumstances, Telusys will allow a continuous range of
Internet IP addresses to access your Sitemanager FTP server.
8. Can I utilize Sitemanager FTP from multiple locations?
You must license and pay for each location that will support Sitemanager FTP.
Firewall and security changes need to be made for each location so there is a
fee involved for each setup.
9. Can I have multiple users utilizing Sitemanager FTP?
If the users are all on a licensed computer host then the answer to this
question is yes.
10. What FTP client software is compatible with Sitemanager FTP?
Sitemanager FTP should be compatible with all FTP clients that follow the
industry standard FTP protocol.
11. Why can't I rename a file?
Sitemanager FTP will not allow you to utilize an illegal file name or a file
name that could potentially disable Sitemanager Web hosting functions or
programs.
12. Why can't I rename a directory?
Sitemanager FTP will not accept illegal file names and will also not allow a
directory to be renamed if it contains private sub-directories, that the user
does not have access to, or sub-directories that contain Sitemanager program
code that can not be moved.
13. There seems to be certain directories on my Web site that I can't
access, why is that?
Private directories that belong to other Sitemanager users within your company
or organization can not be accessed. Also, Sitemanager program, data, and
content directories may also be protected from user access or user
modification.
14. Why can't I upload a particular file?
Check the file's name and make sure that it is legal and doesn't contain any
special characters.
15. Can I utilize the Sitemanager FTP access to upload my own custom
programs or scripts?
No. For reasons of security, Telusys does not support third-party programs or
scripts. Sitemanager FTP does not grant administrative access to a Web server,
it only provides an alternative way to transfer content on or off of a Web
server.
16. I utilized Sitemanager FTP to update my site and now a particular page,
graphic, or program no longer seems to display or work properly, how can I fix
this?
You must restore the information utilizing your own backups of the files you
changed, or you must have Telusys restore data from a backup tape for a
fee.
17. Can I undo changes I have made?
No. FTP does not have a clipboard, wastebasket, or undo feature. Once
something is changed or deleted it is permanently changed or deleted. If requested,
Telusys can restore data from a backup tape for a fee.
18. Can I recover a file I have just erased?
Deleted files are permanently erased. Telusys can restore file(s) from backup
tapes for a fee. The file(s) must have been present at the time of the last backup
to be restorable.
19. I changed the HTML and graphics on my Web site utilizing Sitemanager FTP
and now the programs on my site, such as the Contact Form, no longer display
results pages that match my Web site. What should I do?
Programs do not automatically update themselves to reflect changes you have
made to the look of your Web site. If you have changed the graphics or
layout of your site, Telusys must update the affected programs so they also
reflect the changes you have made. Telusys can provide quotes for updating
individual programs, and the cost is based on the amount of programming time
needed to make the change.
20. I changed directories on my Web site and now the search engine is not
finding my files, how can I correct this?
The search engine indexes content on your site based on a fixed list of
directories. If you find that a new directory is not being indexed and is not
searchable, then you must contact Telusys to update your site's search engine
21. I changed the section names or page titles on my site and now the
navigation buttons or the graphics don't match the new names, how can I correct
this?
If you created your own graphics originally, then you will need to update your
graphics to reflect the changes or contact Telusys to update items such as
navigation buttons, graphical headers, or other comparable items for a fee.
